The first recorded instance of a decorated Christmas tree dates back to the 16th century in Riga, Latvia. Men would decorate a tree with flowers, fruits, and paper, and then set it on fire as part of a winter solstice celebration. This tradition eventually evolved into the Christmas tree we know today.
